Order volume is the wrong trigger
150 orders a day sounds like a threshold, and it is a common one to hear quoted, but it does not determine the answer. Two operations at the same volume can need entirely different things: one shipping 150 small parcels of 40 SKUs from a single room, the other picking 150 mixed pallets across a 40,000 square foot building with scheduled collections.
The real trigger is warehouse complexity — specifically whether your binding constraint is labour throughput inside a large building. That is the question a WMS exists to answer.

Everything in the lower half of that table is an answer to “how do I move more units per hour through a large building”. If that is not your binding constraint today, you would be buying capability you will not configure.
The cost of running both
A separate WMS means two stock records that must agree, an integration to build and maintain, and a standing question of which system is right when they disagree. The third cost is the one consistently underestimated: reconciliation disputes do not stop after go-live, and each one consumes someone whose time is expensive.
Signals that it is time to revisit
- Pickers spend most of their time walking rather than picking, and shortening the walk would change throughput materially.
- You need to plan labour by hour against a forecast, not by shift against a habit.
- Multiple loading docks with scheduled collections that have to be sequenced.
- The building is large enough that slotting by product velocity would measurably reduce travel.
